Honoring Pregnancy & Infant Loss This October
October carries a special meaning for families who have experienced miscarriage, stillbirth, or infant loss. Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month gives us an opportunity to remember the babies who are gone too soon, and to remind grieving parents that their babies, their stories, and their love matter.
This month is also an opportunity to look beyond the appointments and create a space where families experiencing loss can find compassion, understanding, and meaningful ways to remember.
Raising Awareness
Create a Remembrance Collection
Consider dedicating a small area of your boutique to remembrance keepsakes throughout October. Angel Heartbeat Bears, remembrance ornaments, and personalized gifts can give families something tangible to hold onto when their memories feel difficult to express.
Host a Night of Remembrance
October 15 is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, and families around the world participate in the International Wave of Light by lighting a candle at 7 p.m. local time.
You can host a simple evening gathering, candle-lighting ceremony, or host a social media event. Invite families to bring a candle, share a baby's name if they wish, or simply spend a few quiet moments remembering.
You could also create a memory tree, allowing families to write a baby's name on a heart or star and place it on display throughout October.
Give Back to Families
Choose a local or national pregnancy-loss organization to support and donate a portion of October sales. You could donate from every remembrance keepsake purchased, collect optional customer donations, or organize a small fundraiser during a remembrance event.
You can also partner with a local bereavement counselor, hospital, photographer, doula, or nonprofit to provide families with additional resources. Organizations such as Share Pregnancy & Infant Loss Support offer resources and support for bereaved families.
Let Compassion Continue Beyond October
Most importantly, make sure your boutique is prepared year-round. Keep updated grief-support resources available, train your team on compassionate language, and create a private, gentle process for families experiencing loss.
Sometimes the most meaningful thing you can give a family isn't another product or appointment; it's simply the reassurance that their baby mattered, their grief is seen, and they don't have to remember alone.
