Detox After the Pool: Swimming in Chlorine

Detox After the Pool: Swimming in Chlorine

The days are hot. The water is beckoning us outside earlier each day and later each evening. The fireflies, never-ending humidity, and late-night snacks poolside are still happening.

With the summer still in full bloom, kids (and adults) of all ages are diving in.

Whether it 's your backyard pool, resort-style, or neighborhood pool, chemicals are everywhere.

The necessary evil of chlorine (because, let’s face it, even saltwater pools have some chlorine in them) means there is a chemical poisoning our bodies - and our children every time we jump in. The sunscreen, sweat, urine, and other fluids that are released into the pool water cause a reaction with the chlorine called 'chloramines.' These include over 100 byproducts that are mostly toxins – some of which are linked to cancer. Yes, we are swimming in a pool of cancer causing chemicals!

But, we aren't about to skip the pool, right? Right. So what can we do to prevent lingering effects?

    Detox.

3 Ways to Rid the Body of Chlorine

Vitamin C: This amazing vitamin has been proven to neutralize the effects of chlorine and even undo the chemical’s damage. The key is to take it in powder form. There are 3 ways to use Vitamin C:

    • Mix it with water and drink to cleanse the body.
    • Mix it in a spray bottle with water and spray directly on the body after swimming.
    • Mix it with the sunscreen (high-quality, mineral-based sunscreen) and apply before swimming.

The best approach, of course, is all three.

    A Good Bath

Epsom Salt Baths: After swimming, fill the tub with warm water and let Epsom salt dissolve before soaking for 15-30 minutes. This encourages the body to release toxins. (Add in some baking soda for an extra detox.)

    Stay Hydrated

Proper hydration is key to cleansing the body from the inside out!

    Chlorinated pools are linked to:

    • Asthma
    • Breathing problems
    • Skin rashes
    • Eye Irritation
    • Nausea/Upset Stomach
    • Sinus Problems
    • Fatigue
    • Dehydaration
    • Coughing
    • Dry Skin/Hair
    • Cancer

Scary? Sure. However, talk to your kids about not drinking the pool water, taking breaks to stay hydrated, and make sure you detox after every swim session!
