How to Keep Your Uterus Healthy (and ready for pregnancy)

How to Keep Your Uterus Healthy (and ready for pregnancy)

The uterus requires healthy circulation to keep in constant communication with the ovaries and endocrine system. Without proper circulation, your hormonal balance is thrown off, which can lead to irregular ovulation, menstruation, and hormone production. Our bodies are amazing structures that shed cells to be replaced with newer, healthier versions. We can aid this process and work to keep the uterus healthy (or work on regaining its health).

One major reason a uterus can reject a pregnancy is scar tissue, and there are many reasons for scar tissue to be present. The University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine, Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility list the following as ‘main reasons’ for scar tissue in the uterus:

    • Abortion
    • D&C after miscarriage
    • Cesarean section
    • Intrauterine Device (IUD)
    • Abdominal Surgery in the uterus or nearby
    • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) caused by Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD)
    • Endometriosis

Working closely with your doctor and adding in several natural methods (such as uterine massage) can prevent heartache while trying to conceive. While preparing mentally for a pregnancy, consider taking a few months to also prepare your uterus.

How to Keep Your Uterus Healthy

    Exercise

Simply walking every day is great exercise to stimulate your uterus. Anything to increase blood flow and heart rate will help push oxygenated blood to your uterus.

    Yoga for the Uterus

It’s so important to just send your uterus some love.

    Diet

Following a ‘Fertility Diet’ for several months prior to trying to conceive is a great way to improve gut health and prepare the uterus to grow a healthy baby. There are four important foods to make sure you include:

    • Fatty Fish: Good fats keep the uterus healthy!
    • Nuts and Seeds: Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, eliminating fibroids and preventing ovarian cancer Seeds boost the production of hormones and balance cholesterol levels
    • Fruit: Prevents ovarian cancer and keeps your reproductive system healthy
    • Egg Yolks: Containing Choline, which protects against neural tube defects – protecting the uterus

    Hot Castor Oil Compress

Soak a cloth in hot water and add ample amounts of castor oil to it. Place it directly on the skin over the uterus to promote the function, circulation, and healing. You can wrap plastic around you to hold the compress in place and extend the heat, but it isn’t necessary.

    Herbs, Supplements, Cleanses

L-Arginine promotes a healthy uterus for pregnancy implantation. Certain herbs may also be helpful:

    • Raspberry Leaf
    • Goldenseal Root
    • Peony Root: Increases circulation and decreases pain; balances hormones
    • Damiana Leaf: increases circulation to the utuerus; increases libido
    • Dong Quai Root: helps build a healthy uterine lining and increases circulation

If you are currently taking (or have previously been on) birth control, cleansing the uterus is important prior to pregnancy. Birth control causes the uterus to build up a lining unwelcoming to implantation. It also changes your cervical mucus to slowdown and kill off sperm. Simply ending your birth control journey may not be enough to conceive. A good detox and cleansing aids in rebuilding a fertile lining and rebalancing hormones. It also helps you to reverse the damage that other toxic habits or environmental exposures can lead to, such as:

    • Cigarette smoke
    • Pesticides
    • Poor diet
    • Alcohol consumption
    • Excess hormones

Again, work with your midwife or doctor and ask all of your questions prior to even becoming pregnant!
