San Francisco just approved 6-weeks fully paid parental leave. That's right. San Francisco is paving the way. It has just become the first city in our country to require ALL companies provide a FULLY-paid parental leave for parents. The six weeks will allow both the mother and father to take the time off, which realistically means that parents have 12 weeks between the two of them.
Photo credit I cannot type the news fast enough! I am smiling ear to ear! While this news is not as huge as Netflix announcing that its employees will receive an optional year of paid parental leave, this is a small step for our country that can possibly lead to huge changes!Read now
The moment each month when your body shoots daggers through you and sends you into a fetal position as it sheds blood, hating you for not fertilizing the egg it so generally released for you. “You are not pregnant, congratulations, I will reward you with a week of unhappiness. You are welcome.” It’s unfair, but true. Being a woman is beautiful and amazing. We have the ability to create and grow life, but when we decide not to get pregnant, our body puts us through -what seems like- a torturous procedure month after month. It is life. We deal with it, push it aside, and never really talk about it. Because discussing menstruation is taboo, something that is so far from “dinner appropriate” in our society, we have left the door wide open for the Feminine Hygiene companies to take full advantage of us. It has taken me years to research this topic, probably because I just did not want to know, but maybe it is because I have a daughter who will one day need to use feminine care products – or possibly it is because I learned that I have a small (benign – thank God!) tumor on my ovary and I am ready to swallow the truth: I have been inserting toxic, cancer-causing products into my vagina since I turned 14 years old. It stops now. It stops here. Please read on and continue reading after this article. Educate yourself until you realize just how scared we should be; how angry we should be that this has been and continues to happen.
This image shows a far superior breast pump to the one we all know and hate. The pump in the background is what we know. It is loud, semi-painful, unflattering, time-consuming, and "utterly" ridiculous. (Like the pun there? Yes, I referred to the pump as if it was milking a cow. I'm that good.) The future may be here mamas! I feel a bit ridiculous that after birthing four babies, I didn't think to update the breast pump. That being said, I wish the amazingly brilliant couple behind the company Babyation who created this ingenious idea all the best - and all the glory that comes with changing the breastfeeding world!Read now
A dad and Navy corpsman, Brian Hill passed away leaving a devastated family behind. He was involved in a traffic accident and sadly passed away. While this news is life-shattering to those who loved and depended on Brian, there is another reason his story is making headlines. Brian's wife, Courtney, explained that she and her husband were trying to conceive another child the months prior to the accident in Oklahoma. The morning of Brian's wake, Courtney took a pregnancy test. She was able to hold his hand and tell him the wonderful news before she kissed him goodbye forever. With the stress of her husband's death, motherhood, and life in general, there is no surprise to learn that within a few weeks of Brian's passing, Courtney experienced trouble with the pregnancy. She feared the worst, but experienced something unimaginable as she was examined at the hospital. Courtney's pregnancy was healthy, but more than that, she learned she was not carrying one, not two, but three tiny heartbeats within her womb!Read now
Baby Showers are on their way out, and Blessing Ways (Also known as a Mother’s Blessing) are the latest trend. In all actuality, they are not a trend, but a tradition that dates back to the beginning of pregnancy celebrations! It’s about time they become a more traditional and accepted means of celebration in our society!Read now
RECORD YOU BABY'S HEARTBEAT IN AN ADORABLE STUFFED ANIMAL! I do not know how Easter snuck up so fast this year. Maybe it's the craziness of life that made me think we still had another month? I'll go ahead and blame the 'Mommy Brain' and call it a day. My 3 young ones (6,4,2 years old) love doing crafts... and making messes. I should have taken a picture of the patio covered in paint yesterday. I almost lost it - instead, I snapped this picture of Lyle, my two year old, running around buck-naked, covered in paint, with a box on his head. THIS is my life. This is why I don't have time to look at a calendar. Needless to say, I've got to jump on the Easter Train quick or it's going to pass us by. We cut out the baskets and gifts this year, and decided to just do a big blow up pool and water item for each child. The best part of Easter is the egg hunt and decorations anyway.Read now
You know that food coloring is horrible to ingest. But did you know that the same effects can happen just by allowing it to touch the skin? The skin is the largest organ and acts as a sponge to anything that can be absorbed. Did you know that the dye seeps through the shell of the eggs and will be eaten along with the hard boiled eggs? Yep. That's right - you may think you are just decorating the eggs, but reality is that you are allowing the dyes into your children (or yourself). I'm including information on why you should skip the food coloring at the end of this article. That way you can sound completely educated on this topic if a friend starts telling you that you are ridiculous for not dying your eggs in the "normal" way. (I'll probably turn that into an entire blog soon)Read now
Another sad story has been crossing our newsfeed. When a child dies, it strikes a cord in all of us. It is a hard realization to make when you hear of such tragedy. A grieving family in Missouri, is mourning the loss of their four month old son, Gannon. He was born six weeks too early, and weighed in at just three pounds. He spent time in the NICU before going home, but seemed to be healthy and typical from that point on. Ms. Koehler, Gannon's mother, sensed something was wrong when Gannon didn't wake crying in his room one morning. At 9:30am, she walked in to find Gannon unresponsive. She prayed for a miracle as he was transferred to the Children's Hospital. Gannon had a significant loss of oxygen which caused him to lose all brain function. At this point, a decision needed to be made. Both Gannon's mother and father decided to use this tragedy to help - by donating their child's organs.Read now
We can all agree that our country has a horrible way of handling maternity (and paternity!) leave. Another story is making waves, this time it involves a second time mom who learned that she may lose her baby at 20 weeks gestation. She was hospitalized for a month and then sent home to bedrest with hopes of keeping baby in utero for as long as possible. Labor held off for another month before the mother gave birth 8 weeks early. Her baby then spent another month in the NICU. Little did she know that her maternity leave had been ticking away before her eyes. She was under the assumption that she would be able to utilize her twelve week maternity leave from this point on. The reality was, she only had two weeks left.Read now
