I feel as though we live in a “Fast Food” society. One in which, the faster we can be done with something, the faster we can move on to the next task. Very few people take joy in the little things anymore. I can’t stand on a pedestal here, as I am just as guilty as the next person, BUT I am working on changing this trait. I want to instill a sense of calmness and appreciation in my children (and myself) that is rooted to their being, not just something they sometimes think about. I want my children to always know that a handmade gift is better than store bought, that a letter sent snail mail is more fun than an e-mail or text message, and that a made by hand valentine is full of more love than anything bought in a store.

Birthing at home is a gentle, peaceful way to bring your child earthside. There is a calmness about being in your place of comfort. I couldn’t imagine birthing anywhere else. After experiencing 4 homebirths - one of which was too fast to have help, I figured, why save all the information for myself when I can share it with you!

Sleep.
A foreign word at this point. “Mama. Mama. Mama. MAMA!” A toddler is screaming 3 inches from my face, while I was trying to rock an infant down for a nap. A nap that will never happen now. Dinner should have been started about an hour ago, but the toddler has spilled an entire box of cereal throughout the kitchen and decided to “help” clean it up with a soapy, wet dish towel. You know, making it impossible to sweep it all easily. Bills need paid, the laundry pile is taking over an entire room, you are out of wine, your hair is in the same bun you created 2 days ago, the fridge is looking bare, and the baby could possibly be cutting a tooth. Oh crap, now there’s glitter being mixed into the cereal mess. Sh*t, you could really use a glass of wine. The holiday season is already beautiful, but add in birth and babies, and you reach a whole new level.

I don’t know how it’s shopping season already, but it is. If you are anything like me (children, work, cook, clean, fold, wash, repeat), then you shop online. I cannot imagine navigating stores on Black Friday, or any other day for that matter. I always have my kids with me, and unless there is a play area and a reliable person to watch said children as I shop, then it ain’t happening. (Why has Target not created this play area?)

I have an 8 year old daughter, and 6, 4 and 1.5 year old sons, and another daughter who is still being snuggled all day. We homeschool and I am a write-from-home mom. I have enough toys to populate the planet. We have recently gone through and donated more than 3/4 of said items in hopes to tone down the madness. The process wasn’t easy, but I came up with a great method. I laid out several toys at a time and allowed each child to pick three that stayed; the rest were gone. It was interesting to watch their thought process. They would discuss with one another about what items would be played with in what ways. They would beg to keep other pieces, and I won’t lie, I caved on a few – but only if they presented a strong argument. In the end, everyone was happy.

Spending the holidays pregnant is wonderful in the land of sweets, but when it comes to receiving gifts, most people gift for the baby-to-be instead of to the mom who is currently pregnant! If you want to be a great gift-giver to an expecting mom this holiday season, look no further.

It has been almost 1000 days now. I did not dream you up. You were real. You were inside of me, a part of me -- and you will always be mine.

The Smithsonian Magazine recently published an article focusing on the history of the first at-home pregnancy test. After reading said article, I realized that in the past 9 years, I have taken hundreds of tests, but yet I never once questioned the origin of them. And I question everything. (Understatement of the year.)

Genetics are amazing. Sometimes there is absolutely no doubt whose bloodline a new addition is related to. Other times, it takes a little digging to find that one relative whom your child truly resembles. Either way, when you compare pictures from the past and present, you end up doing a double take.
