    The Seasoned Mom Diaper Bag

    The Seasoned Mom Diaper Bag

Let’s get real here. Those Pinterest lists of perfect diaper bag items are all good until reality sets in.

Don’t lie. Baby #1, that list was wonderful and lasted the first few months, until baby outgrew the newborn clothing you had packed as backup, you run out of wipes, you hoard your receipts, and you spill Starbucks in the bag from lack of sleep. Then you get real and decide that your bag packing has reached a new level: Seasoned Mom Level.

Just so you know you aren’t alone on the random crap you have in your diaper bag, I polled the amazing world of social media. I had an impressive amount of moms share their diaper bags with me. Most common items found in their bags: receipts, crumbs, loose crayons, and smashed diapers. (Note: wipes didn’t make the top of the list.) Are you feeling better about what’s crammed in that ultra-expensive Petunia Pickle Bottom? So let’s do this. Let’s see what seasoned moms really have packed. I’ll start:

    DB

I have too many kids to carry to bring the bag in anywhere. It is more of a car bag that I grab if needed. I typically bring the wet bag with a diaper and my wallet inside.

    • Ergo Babycarrier (This goes with me EVERYWHERE – with 3 other little ones, the baby is always worn.)
    • Cloth diaper and inserts
    • Zippered wet bag (The wet diaper I forgot about from yesterday still zipped inside.)
    • Wipes
    • Baby clothes – including a single baby legwarmer.
    • Toddler shorts – because toddlers have accidents
    • Clutch wallet with cards, money, and a crap ton of receipts stuffed inside
    • Trader Joe’s green tea mints – yes the carton is empty. There was one mint left before the picture.
    • Planner stuffed with to-do lists and writing deadlines – along with lots of pencils and pens
    • Outdated checkbook
    • Site word flashcards
    • Sunglasses
    • Sunscreen (I didn’t know that was in there – let alone two different tubes of it.)
    • Toddler book
    • Hackie sack
    • Toy car
    • Coins
    • Crumbs

Still not sure what you should pack in your diaper bag? Here are a few more examples:

    db1

New mom Lacey carries: "Wipes, diapers, wet bag, a few dry cloth wipes for back up, bib, teething ring, sunscreen, bug spray, DIY hand sanitizer, sunglasses, small jar of coconut oil, two changes of baby clothes, snacks for me, and blankets." She also keeps extra diapers and a change of clothes for herself in the car. (She’s only 4 months in – so she hasn’t lost the art of organizing yet)

    DB2

She has a little purse that she can toss in or take out of the diaper bag easily too.

    DB11

Liz, mama to 3 shares: “Seriously - so.many.receipts. Along with two baby toys, two crumpled Naty by Nature diapers (note: no wipes), a notebook for work, a packet of shakeology because I never get to eat a real breakfast, one hand-sewn moccasin (note: just one), a few coupons that will conveniently disappear into the depths of this bottomless handcrafted leather bag when I'm standing in the checkout line. I really wish I could say I staged this.” She may or may not also have coupons to Total Wine stashed in there... PS - I like Liz.

    DB3

Carrie, mom of two little girls writes: “My make-up bag, my sunglasses case, baby cup, a my little pony, an organic potato (too cook at a friend's house who was having us over for spaghetti dinner& I might need something easy to cook for my 9 month old), diaper & wipes, my friend's baby's diaper, the wrong cell phone charger, pens, shoes for my 2.5 year old, wallet, nursing scarf (because of my awkward summer tank top I wore the other day), kinder egg candy a friend just gave us from his recent trip, rattle, toy car, spot it (Lexie's current favorite quiet game), pj's for the baby...is that it?!”

    DB4

Tara has two sweet babes and a diaper bag that puts mine to shame! Tara has a clutch thing that carries: Diapers/changing pad/wipes. She brings two extra onesies for baby, one extra outfit for toddler including undies, sunscreen, and always the same snacks (raisins, Cheerios, nibbly finger bar and a Lara Bar for herself lol that maybe one day she'll eat!), foam hand sanitizer, zipper coin purse that holds my DL, CC, and a bunch of folded up receipts, and her newest additions: Epi Pen and Liquid Benedryl!

    DB5

Denise just added her second baby boy to the family. What’s in her bag? “Burp cloth, hat, diapers, baby toys, wet ones, hand sanitizer, extra onesie, water bottle, puppy poop bags (for stinky diapers), snacks usually kind and cliff bars, lip balm, nail file, eye drops, lip gloss, wallet, and hot wheels.”

    DB6

Hollie, mom to two, has a secret we all need to know: A zipper bag of AWESOMENESS that is carried in her purse/diaper bag. “Contents aren't actually that awesome, but the zipper bag concept is. It's the one thing I can grab when I'm changing bags, which is all the time. Small vinyl zipper bag with good lip balm, colored lip stuff for a "real adult" emergency situation like sudden girls’ night or meeting a teacher, the wet wipes, hand sanitizer, and lotion. I can grab it all and go.” In her big bag, she has “receipts, hot wheels, wet wipes for faces and hands, and 75 random crayons.”

    DB7

Tracy loves her Osprey Nebula backpack and snapped a pic this morning before boarding an airplane with it. What did she get in there, you ask?

    DB8

Back pocket-- iPad for 3 hour flight, Color Wonder, Diapers and wipes, Baby toys for a week, and Mom's vitamins Middle pocket-- Mom's make up, Blender bottle, More wipes, Crunchy snacks, and Mom's lumbar cushion Front pocket-- Hmmm, more wipes, More diapers, Scarf (multipurpose nursing, whatever), Pens and post its (you know: toddler), Emergency Little Yums (fresh!!), and the Phone battery No worries, Tracy says her purse has a pocket full of crap. She’s normal.

    DB9

Brandy just added a sweet girl to her family. Her bag has “a wallet, coupon folder, wipes, wet bag, diapers, essential oils, chap stick, bug spray, small first aid kit, extra outfits...and.....a koozie.” I love Brandy. Also, I need a travel koozie.

    DB10

Amanda just added baby #3! She’s got this down to a minimalist science: “Changing pad, 2 prefolds, 1 cover, wet bag, wipes, hand sanitizer (never use it), sun hat, burp cloth, onesie or change of clothes. I travel light. Always have!”

    What's in your diaper bag?
