May 2016 -- A study just identified that the child’s brain hears his mother’s voice differently than all other voices. That’s right, the mother’s voice engages more brain circuits in her child’s brain than other’s voices do.

YUCK. It’s the time of winter crud being passed around like crayons at the school table. Even the little ones are susceptible. Viruses are everywhere right now, and the warm to cold temperatures outside are not helping.
It's not news that we practice a lot of unnecessary things in the birth world. It's also not news that we practice things that flat out don't work. It seems though that tradition outweighs science until enough of the medical community stand together to make their voices heard. It has been common practice for well over 100 years to place an antibiotic ointment in the eyes of the newborn to prevent diseases that may cause blindness as the child grows. The most common diseases are gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis. In the late 1800's, it was silver nitrate that was placed on the newborn's eye lids, and it was very irritating to the baby’s eyes. Years later, the erythromycin antibiotic eye ointment became more commonly used as a treatment because it has fewer side effects to the newborn. It is placed in the lower lid of the eye by the nurse by two hours of age.
You have in your arms a beautiful child already, maybe more than one. You are all happy and healthy, but something about your previous birth haunts you. Something says, “I want to do it different next time.”
Before becoming parents to a human baby, many couples are mom and dad to a furbaby. Typically, this furry, four-legged animal has been placed on quite the pedestal over some long period of time. Bringing home a newborn can present a lot of worry for the expecting family.
There are not enough hours in the day to get everything done, and just when you think you are so tired that your eyes may close while walking to bed, a kid wakes up needing something. It never fails; sleep is hard to come by as a mom. Somehow, bedtimes get pushed back for one reason or another and then your own sleep is always interrupted, and then the morning arrives before you are ready for it. This cycle may drive you to crazy town, and with good reason!
The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists released a document yesterday that discusses the healthy laboring mother and how to help her have a successful birth.

Did you know that in the last three months, Johnson and Johnson has been ordered to pay out over $120 million dollars in two legal cases linking their products to cancer?
You are not crazy. Your child is not actually trying to drive you mad right now. There may actually be an answer as to why everything seems to be ‘off’ today.
THE FULL MOON.
You see, we live and move in cycles. Just like the planet we live on, we too are effected by the moon phases. Everyone knows the moon affects the tides, but did you know it also plays a part in the weather? The atmosphere is a fluid, similar to the ocean, and so the moon generates gravitational tides there. They are not as strong as the sun’s pull, but the moon still plays a role in our weather. Is it coincidence that the woman’s cycle averages the same length as the moon’s full cycle? Is it coincidence that more women go into labor during a full moon than not?
While our general audience is a slew of ages, most are already parents. I have faith that you know not to prank anyone today about a pregnancy. Although, I have seen many (TOO MANY) repeat parents post April Fool's pregnancy announcements, or 'Oops it looks like it's twins instead of one!" type posts.

Where to begin. My son Davin was stillborn last year and I was for fortunate enough to have had his heart beat recorded. I found healing in taking My Heartbeat Bear animals and adding weight to them for other bereaved parents to have something special to hold and cuddle. I’ve since started a non profit called Our Baby’s Legacy for pregnancy and infant loss support, and these weighted animals are a big part of what we do. The product My Baby Heartbeat Bear makes is really great quality, which is extra important for me considering they may become some parents most cherished possessions after their loss. The animals are super soft and I absolutely love the vintage design where they are floppy and cuddly, and just the perfect size. I also love that there are so many choices, I’m always touched by why one parent chooses one over the other. Seems like a small feature, but to be able to choose a cow because thief nursery was to be barnyard themed, or a bunny bc their baby was born in the spring, is something very special. I also have found working with the company to be a wonderful experience. Sheldon is who interact with most. When first setting up my account he offered a free sample and has since sent me samples of other items by them. I’ve had to call and add last minute animals to my order or request they be processed ASAP and he and the other staff have always been very accommodating. I can’t say enough about how easy they make my job. they don’t likely know it but they are making a massively positive impact in the bereavement community with these animals through Our Baby’s Legacy. The animals bring light and comfort into the lives of an otherwise dark and broken place.
